that was fun! let's do it again!

When I first started working out, I had a plan. I wanted to protect my shoulders, both of which have old injuries which didn't receive proper medical attention at the time. I wanted to build strength rather than bulk. And I knew that working the same muscle groups two days in a row doesn't give them a chance to recover. So to avoid overdoing it, I set a three-times-a-week schedule and planned to bump up the weight on the machines only when an exercise seemed too easy.

My first few workouts were pretty hard. I broke a sweat pretty early in the rotation, and I felt sore the next day. For a little while after that I could keep up the pressure -- whichever machines I'd added weight to would be pretty hard the next time, and the others would at least feel like I was getting exercise. I'd be sweaty at the end of the workout, even if I didn't really get that way until near the end.

Today I started my workout in the usual style -- bump up the weight by half a plate on the machines that seemed too easy last time, and leave the others where they were. But although the individual muscle groups felt like I was working them, after two or three machines I just didn't feel like I was getting any exercise. So I went back to the beginning and added a plate to every machine, even the ones that were hard last time. Ah, now that's a workout!

After dripping sweat on all the machines, and barely finishing the third set on half of them, I'm now feeling appropriately sore -- the good, endorphinated sore. And Wednesday suddenly seems like a long way away.
